I'd make 2 small corrections. The Abyss is far from one of Mr. Cameron's lesser works. While it may not have the box office of Titanic, or Avitar or T2, Artistically it is generally seen as a marginally flawed masterwork, I believe. That said, yes, it was one of his less successful films financially. Note 2 is that Alan Silvestri was far from "up and coming" at this point; he'd been working regularly since '72 and by '88's Who Framed Roger Rabit, he was much more mainstream than "up and coming" by almost any measure, especially within the industry.
