The plot of the robot boy and his mother was the entire basis for the film. Kubrick actually intended Steven to direct it. He only ever wanted to produce the film. Although I agree with your review of the score, I feel if you had done a little research you would have discovered that the "cheezy cop-out" ending and the "typical romanticism" were all Kubrick. All Steven did was direct the film as Kubrick had intended. I recommend that the information presented be kept to opinions about the score. While calling the merits of the mother film into question may be at times justified, it only suffers to degrade the other opinions presented when the first words out are ignorantly and basely false accusations.
