jack of all trades
Arlington Road   Saturday, July 23, 2005 (2:03 a.m.)

Arlington Road's score isn't terrific, but it isn't as bad as the main review would lead one to believe. Yes, the opening track does contain some unsettling and percussive-heavy music, but it works. It works in the movie and it works as a listen-only experience. I wouldn't say that it's pleasant to listen to, but it does create a certain uneasy mood. The movie is about home-grown terrorism - one can't expect the film's score to make them feel all cozy and safe. However, what the main review negects to mention about this opening track is the complete turn around that occurs at about the 3:35 mark. It then transforms into a weird soaring kind of soft techno ballad. It is pretty cool, actually. The rest of the score is varied, with some of the songs seeming like eerie, quiet underscore and others being a little more melodic. All-in-all, Badalamenti has contributed an atypical score for an atypical film. What does this mean for the score fan? I don't know exactly. It depends on your tastes and it depends what you're in the mood to listen to. I think this score is just fine.
