This is a beautiful song. Thank you for posting the lyrics. I am a teacher and I am doing a lesson one the book Requiem which is a book of stories a pictures taken the the photographers who died in Vietnam and Indochina. I am creating an iMovie to introduce the book and this is the perfect song for one of the sections. Thanks again.

I love the song as well, and knowing the English translations of the French lyrics adds a whole new dimension to my feeling to the song, especially in this turmoil time when a war is being waged and people are dying. I also have the book Requiem, and I think the song is a very fitting backdrop.

Being a soundtrack fan myself, appreciation of good matching of the right music to the right visual image is one of my biggest interest. May I also also suggest you the following piece of musics,

Band of Brothers OST - No. 13 "Buck in Hospital"
Band of Brothers OST - No. 20 "BOB Requiem"
The Killing Fields OST - No. 1 "Pran's Theme"
The Killing Fields OST - No. 2 "Requiem for a City"
The Killing Fields OST - No. 4 "Pran's Theme II"

I think the tunes above are all so poignant, but not overtly militaristic sounding, yet still moving and may be useful for your project.

Regards.

Larry

FOr a little more positive spin, the song was used for a skydiving film. It is done very well by a Glenn J.

The song is very moving, though i find most of the songs that Lisa Gerrard does or is involved in a incredible.

This language is actually Breton, a Celtic language from the Welsh (Bythonic) language branch spoken in West Brittany. Though it does look a lot like French due to its neighbor pushing the borders of Brittany.

Just decided to clear it up. Great song indeed!

Fantastic piece, simply breathtaking. But does anyone know what Lisa Gerrard is actually saying? I can't find it anywhere. It often sounds like shes just painting with her voice as it were and not singing actual words. is this the case?

cheers

have you noticed that all the lyrics on the net have some lines that are ommited in the song? Here is the text with parts that Denez Prigent doesn't sing:

Gortozet 'm eus, gortozet pell

E skeud teńval an tourioł glav

As a Breton, I prefer this translation:

0:04] - LG
I waited, waited for a long time
In the dark shadow of brown towers
In the dark shadow of brown towers

[0:30] - LG
In the dark shadow of rain towers
You will see me waiting forever
You will see me waiting forever

[0:59] - DP
To carry me over the tracks
It will come back full of spray
In the dark shadow of the black towers

[1:27] - LG
One day it will come back
Over the lands, over the seas
Will come back the green wind
And brin with it my wounded heart

[2:03] - DP
Will come back the blue wind
And bring with it my wounded heart
I will be pulled away by its breath

[2:37] - DP
One day it will come back
Over the seas, over the lands
Far away in its stream to another land

[3:13] - LG
I will be pulled away by its breath
Far away by its stream, wherever it wishes
Wherever it wishess, far away from this world
Between the sea and the stars
[3:48]

It's rather difficult to translate celtic tongues, a word may have different meanings( for exemple, glaz means green or blue) and, furthermore, the first letter of many words (nouns) may change:tad, dad or zad is the same word( "father").

I'm fluent in Breton and French, but not really in English, particularly with grammar:my translation modified the vocabulary, but syntax errors are possible .Below is a french translation, for those french-speaking:

[Denez Prigent] [Denez Prigent]
Gortozet 'm eus, gortozet pell J'ai attendu, j'ai attendu longtemps
E skeud teńval an tourioł gell Dans l'ombre sombre des tours brunes
E skeud teńval an tourioł gell Dans l'ombre sombre des tours brunes

E skeud teńval an tourioł glav Dans l'ombre sombre des tours de pluie
C'hwi am gwelo gortoz atav Vous me verrez attendre toujours
C'hwi am gwelo gortoz atav Vous me verrez attendre toujours

[Lisa Gerrard] [Lisa Gerrard]
Un deiz a vo 'teuio en-dro Un jour il reviendra
Dreist ar morioł, dreist ar maezioł Par-dessus les mers, par-dessus les champs

[Denez Prigent] [Denez Prigent]
Un deiz a vo 'teuio en-dro Un jour il reviendra,
Dreist ar maezioł, dreist ar morioł Par dessus les campagnes, par dessus les mers
'Teuio en-dro an avel c'hlas Reviendra le vent vert
Da analań va c'halon gloaz't Et emportera avec lui mon coeur blessé

[Lisa Gerrard] [Lisa Gerrard]
D'am laerezh war an treujoł M'emporter sur les chemins
'Teuio en-dro karget a fru Il reviendra, chargé d'embruns
E skeud teńval an tourioł du Dans l'ombre sombre des tours noires
Kaset e vin diouzh e anal Grace ą son souffle, je serais emporté
Pell gant ar red en ur vro all Loin dans le courant, dans un autre pays

[Denez Prigent] [Denez Prigent]

I think you're right. After many roamings on the web, i haven't found any lyrics for her part, and read some comments saying she sang this without words.

Do you really think so? Have you ever spent some time in France especially in Britain? I am proud to be both Breton and French.

I dont believe that these are the correct lyrics for Gortoz a ran.
I printed them off and when Lisa Gerrard sings i cant find it in the lyrics, they dont match!!
Does anyone have the correct lyrics or a different version to Gortoz a ran?
Please let me know.

NEVER MIND! Thanks - I found an earlier thread that says its a celtic language - Breton! Learn something every day - but so haunting.

I can't help but think of the Rangers who went to help their buddies in the downed helicopter, and paid for that with their lives.

We hear the term hero so often these days that it has become cheapened - worthless. These men were heroes in the classic sense of the word - and they have been forgotten - they were abandoned by the administration at that time - there deaths unavenged.

Sorry - I didn't mean to preach - it is a beautiful but awfully haunting song.
