Watching the film again and paying attention to the music I feel that Scott did a very good job synching his images with the music that Vangelis provided. It may not be a traditional, thematic score, but it fits the world of the film and adds to it. I find it odd that Christian didn't feel the "noirish" music didn't fit the film. "Bladerunner" has a very noir look to it, and with Rachel looking very much like a 40's pin up girl, I think that the sax music worked great.
For all that, listening to the music by itself isn't as entertaining. As Christian mentions, much of it is atmospheric, and I find that I have to be in the right mood to enjoy it. I dislike the dialogue added to the score, with the exception of “Tears in Rain”, but would have preferred to have both versions available. What music is provided on the ’94 album makes for a good complete listen, and yet not one I revisit very often. I had hoped that the three disc set would provide some of the missing music, but I’m glad I read reviews that steered me away.
With that said, I agree with Christian’s three star rating for the ’94 release of this score. I rate the music in the film a little higher, nearly hitting four stars.
Vangelis already created a type of “inspired by ‘Bladerunner’ album” called “The City”. It’s done in a very similar style and contains some interesting use of Japanese vocals as well. Combine it with some of the atmospheric tracks from Kenji Kawai’s “Ghost in the Shell” and you’ve a solid bleak future soundscape to enjoy.
