Not as good as Moulin Rouge   Thursday, February 13, 2003 (7:40 a.m.)

Not as melodious and beautiful as Moulin Rouge. They are totally different musicals altogether. One is about Love, the other is about lies, deceit, and murder.

Just because it's not as optimistic as Moulin Rouge and showcases different parts of human nature, doesn't mean it's not as good.

Agreed. They ARE totally different musicals altogether. The problem with many filmgoers who aren't accustomed to the old movie musicals of the past and/or the visceral experience of actual live theatre will make this lazy comparison. "Moulin Rouge" (a great movie don't get me wrong, even though Baz totally butchered "La Boheme" on stage making it the operatic equivalent of a Big Mac), is a patchwork musical made up of AM Gold, FM Top 40 and Easy Listening Songs. "Chicago" on the other hand actually has a full-on original score that survives the test of time. A show written in 1975, An award-winning revival, countless roadshows, and now, a hit movie, only proves how strong a piece this is. The beauty of "Chicago" lies in Kander & Ebb's lyrics. This is a biting, satiric piece that doesn't talk about Freedom, Truth, Beauty and Love. It's actually the exact opposite. Imprisonment, Deceit, Jealousy, and Hatred. Listen to "Class" and you'll see why many flock to catch Kander & Ebb shows. Kander & Ebb, along with their "Cabaret" and "Kiss of the Spider-Woman" have fashioned a great musical score with amazing lyrics. To compare it to "Moulin Rouge" only discredits both films, which, in my opinion, are two amazingly good movies that should stand on their own merits.

What are you talking abotu??!?!? Moulin Rouge was AWFUL!! There was absloutely no point and it made no sense and the music was soooo boring. Chicago had an interesting story that made sense and was easy to follow and the music was so catchy it had me tapping my feet at some points.

What am I talking about? I'm talking about a movie that was pretty cool. Moulin Rouge one of the most cleverly put together musicals ever written. Yes! It was awful! Full of awe, I mean. People misuse that word all of the time.

Well, that is what the two movies are about. But did you notice the acting ability and talent range in the two movies? Quite different, if you ask me.;)

I agree the acting is different but the soundtrack has nothing to do with the acting. Although I do agree that Moulin Rouge was much better.
