People keep making excuses for film music by Cliff Martinez, but I've decided he's a hack. I can't believe he's still working on Hollywood movies.

I'm not gonna make excuses for anyone. Excuses imply that there was some sort of failure that needs to be explained. I do not believe "Contagion" was a failure, and I think it legitimately worked well for the movie. It supported the mood of the film very well. I usually hate dissonant tones, but it reflected the unfeeling nature of the virus very well. I'm not too familiar with Martinez's other work, but I agree that it could be tiresome if he is, indeed, a one trick pony. I also won't be rushing to stores for this soundtrack since it's not that enjoyable in and of itself, but it did what was required of it, and it did it well. Not every movie needs a score to tell you what to feel. Sometimes, the movie already does that even without the music (this is one of those movies). I'd say 4 stars in film, 2 on album.
