John Powell's Rise To Fame

John Powell's Rise To Fame   Monday, August 6, 2001 (10:55 p.m.)

Ok, so the movie sucked. It tried to be Men in Black, and it tried to rip off Ghostbusters using Head & Shoulders as a slime substitute... Nevermind. It was an awful film, but the music is something to be treasured. Ever since Face/Off, I knew John Powell had a knack for scoring. Though Hans Zimmer coached him, he definitely has proven to be a true master of thematic developement. Antz and Chicken Run impressed me, Shrek blew me away, and now John Powell has proven he does'nt need Harry Gregson-Williams to be great. Though I have just recently aquired an ear for Mr.Powell's music, I have not abandoned my other favorite composers, Jerry Goldsmith, Danny Elfman, and Trevor Rabin. And now here is a list of some of John Powell finest tracks:
1 - Chicken Run : 16-Building the Crate (Inspirational, powerful, and heroic. This
pounding march theme almost does'nt belong in an animated film)
2 – Evolution : 20-The Fire Truck (Outstanding buildup to a fine theme for a cruddy movie)
3 – ANTz : Big Shoe (Cool sounding action music for an interesting scene with woody allen)
4 – Chicken Run : 18-The Chickens Are Revolting (Just a more toned down version of the Building the Crate theme, moving and fits the scene well)
5 – Evolution : 15-The Mall Chase (The only good scene in the movie and worthy of this track, stirring action music with the theme in all its glory)
7 - Shrek : 13-True Love's First Kiss (Incredible suite for a horrible soundtrack consisting of a Bahamen song. About a minute into this track u can picture Shrek and Donkey atop the dragon flying to save princess fiona, with a loud brassy, choiral theme that deserves an oscar in my opinion. Another track id like to hear would be the escape scene from the dragon’s lair and pricess fiona’s duet with the ill-fated bluejay). Ps – if a score cd is not produced soon i may hate the album companies even more than i already do.
