So if I'm reading this right. . . it's a bad score because it doesn't do the more mainstream things Elfman used to do with horror/comedy. . . and because it recycles all the ideas Elfman used to do with horror/comedy? Does anyone else see the contradition here?! For those with tastes slightly to the left of the mainstream, The Frighteners is one of Elfman's edgiest little gems for the genre. It's very complex and chaotic at times, but that's half the fun. What he does with that poor harpsichord is delicious - it literally sounds like somebody's picking up the instrument and banging it around the room at times.
