Vide Cor Meum   Sunday, March 18, 2001 (4:58 a.m.)

I can see that some people are very interested in the arie "Vide Cor Meum" which is being played in the new Ridley Scott picture "Hannibal".

As a composer I have met many people including Mr. Patrick Cassady - and let me say that he is VERY flattered by the big response his work has had. He didnt expected anything like this. Actually he thought that it wouldnt be noticed that "Vide Cor Meum" was written as a special opus for this picture. But he is very happy that it has created so many fans. And he is thinking about writing a full scale opera in the same style and spirit (and with the same libretto)...

I hope you´ll be happy....

Yours sincerely

MrJoel

Hi Emilio,

You can listen to Vide Cor Meum at the following address:

http:/home.fuse.com/siren/main.htm

It's only part of the whole piece though. If anyone knows where I can listen to the whole thing, please let me know!

Hi Joh and everyone else,

I know its been a while (like 3 years), but only just saw the movie last week, and am so glad I did! Actually didn't want to see the movie, but just goes to show there is something good to be found when you least expect it!
Is the offer for the score still available? Does anyone know yet if more of the music has been completed?
Thanks,

Dear All,

We played this song for my wedding 3 years ago, and now my brother is getting married and would love the play this song again (that just shows you how great it is). We are looking for the sheet musics, the score, the works. This time we have both female and male vocal (professional western opera singers that performed at Taiwan's National Music Hall) who are my family friends, as well as 8-12 choir singers (also renowned) to sing the background.

Please, if you have sources to the sheet music (vocals, piano), please send them to me at my email. I think this would be the closest performance we will ever hear in Taiwan to the florence opera scene in hannibal. What a wonderful piece! Appreciate all your help.

Michael Ng

I would really appreciate the score to Vide Cor Meum as well. I'd be especially pleased with a vocal and violin, viola, and cello arrangement. If nothing else vocal and violin would be perfect. Please send it to swingkid_91@yahoo.com

Mr. Joel,

I cannot listen enough to this particular piece of music, "Vide Cor Meum," It is enthralling, enchanting, and simply beautiful. I didn't really pick up too much of it while I watched the movie, but when I listened to the soundtrack, it brought tears to my eyes. It is so incredibly soothing and moving. It's transcendental. I'm listening to it as I type. Please pass on my eternal thanks to Mr. Cassidy for his phenomenal skill in writing this piece.

Does anyone know if it is at all possible to purchase this score for vocal performance? I'm interested in performing this with the choir that i direct. I'm sure i'd have to get permission and all that jazz, but I am in love with this piece. Thanks!

Vide Cor Meum translation?   Tuesday, April 10, 2001 (9:06 a.m.)

Does anybody out there speak Italian who could translate this mini-operetta for me? My boyfriend is in love with this song and would like to use it when/if we get married... but I've read about how it has to do with eating a heart and I'm not sure it's quite wedding material. It sounds beautiful, I just want to be sure of the meaning. I never read Dante's work in school, so I'm not familiar with it. Please contact me if you can help. thanks in advance

There are many translations to Dante's first sonnet of La Vita Nuova, from which the libretto of the opera aria is based. I will stick with the one Thomas Harris uses in his book. Ten of the fourteen lines are:

"The first three hours of night were almost spent

The time that every star shines down on us

When Love appeared to me so suddenly

That I still shudder at the memory.

Joyous Love seemed to me, the while he held

My heart within his hands, and in his arms

My lady lay asleep wrapped in a veil.

He woke her then and trembling and obedient

She ate that burning heart out of his hand;

Weeping I saw him then depart from me."
Harris takes this translation from Mark Musa, 1962, Indiana University Press.

Dante wrote this sonnet as a result of a dream he had of a lady he was in love/infatuated with. My interpretation is that the very act of "eating" someone's heart is in large part the possession of it. On one level, it's much like someone "taking" your heart.

Revisit the discussion of the "burning heart" with your boyfriend to determine his interpretation. It may be very revealing of his feelings for you.

I leave you with Hannibal's words to Allegra--sort of food for thought.

"Could he daily feel a stab of hunger for her and find

nourishment on the very sight of her? I think so."

Good luck!

The translation of the actual piece in the film Hannibal is as follows (Italian first then English)It's a stunning piece from Patrick Cassidy but not appropriate for a wedding as it's tinged with sadness!!!!:
ITALIAN/LATIN
Chorus: E pensando di lei
Mi sopragiunse uno soave sonno

Ego dominus tuus
Vide cor tuum
E d'esto core ardendo
Cor tuum
(Chorus: Lei paventosa)
Umilmente pascea.
Appreso gir lo ne vedea piangendo.

La letizia si convertia
In amarissimo pianto

Io sono in pace
Cor meum
Io sono in pace
Vide cor meum
ENGLISH
Chorus: And thinking of her
Sweet sleep overcame me

I am your master
See your heart
And of this burning heart
Your heart
(Chorus: She trembling)
Obediently eats.
Weeping, I saw him then depart from me.

Joy is converted
To bitterest tears

I am in peace
My heart
I am in peace
See my heart

Having admired this lovely piece on the Hannibal soundtrack for a long time, I heard a new version of the song on the radio today. Listening to it, sounded slightly different, a different voice from the one on the soundtrack.

Turns out the singer Katherine Jenkins has recorded her version of it (which is very beautiful) for her new CD "Second Nature". Far as I understand this is going to be available to purchase from 18/10/2004.

All I know is I have to have this version as well!

Dear Joel

I read your commentary in your mail.

When I wathched the mivie Hannibal again
I specially noticed the Vide Cor Meum of
which I am very fond of.

As you mentionned in your mail that Mr Cassidy
has the intention of writing an aria specially in the same style
I wondered if He meanwhile did.

I would look forward to hearing from you

All the best

Carlo
