Hollow Man - Great score!   Friday, August 18, 2000 (5:48 p.m.)

Great score! Sure, there are similarities to this score and Basic Instinct, but that is only natural considering that the director was Paul Verhoeven. The conversation was probably put to Goldsmith to use some of the same thematic material and orchestrations in "Hollow Man" as was done in "Basic Instinct". However, Goldsmith's genius was superbly demonstrated in that he was able to take similiar thematic material and weave new blood into his lines and motifs. He excels in meter shifting and this shows throughout this great piece of music! I gave it five stars and it sits next to my "Basic Instinct" score in my wide collection of Goldsmith gems.

The Hollowman score was very enticing in the way it opens. Also one may also enjoy the ingenious opening in track #6. Very subtle, yet evocative and an interesting piece. There is a lot in common with the Haunting score, in regard to the main theme. I give it four stars. ****

I was interested in the comments regarding the orchestrations that Goldsmith uses in this score. I am curious - does Goldsmith orchestrate his scores himself, with the credited orchestrator playing a merely supervisory role, or does the credited orchestrator actually take Goldsmith's compositions, and do the final orchestration?
