Oscar contender! 4 stars   Wednesday, December 10, 2003 (5:45 a.m.)

I bought this soundtrack yesterday and was surprised and delighted to find it a very personal and piano and string driven score.
In some respects it's better (a Horner version of Dragonfly or the Sixth Sense)
than last year's a Beautiful Mind.
Let me explain...
A Beautiful mind is truly beautiful and romantic, but there's something about the not often heard subtlety of James Horner (while a BMind kind of threw the emotions in your face musically) H of S & Fog touches deeply on resonating emotions.
The Oscar peeps seem to go for the more classy, intimate, or slightly unusual and this fits them all.
The only thing keeping me from calling it a CLASSIC, is the fact that there is one definite theme and another more classically inclined "theme" ("Two People")and then just a lot of short and longer "brush strokes" on the strings. Thus why I said it reminds me of Dragonfly and I even found myself thinking I was listening to Whalerider by Lisa Gerrard.
Oh, and by the way, I loved the "tension" motif of the plucked strings and timpani-very interesting sound!
And just one more thing- the only track featuring typical Horner transitions and theme is "The Shooting, A Payment for our Sins."
4 stars

hi there,

i just wanna gv my opinion about urs.
i think that this score house of sand n fog i mean,is good for its melody but the music doesnt strong enough.yah, may be its sound classic n emotionaly but its dont gv a deeper touch of sound.
n i think,it cant be nominated for the oscar coz its not power enough to achieve the level of THE BEST 5 in Academy Award.my rate for this score is 3.15
