Better than Schindler's List, I think   Wednesday, May 2, 2007 (10:54 p.m.)
• Now Playing: Casualties of War (Ennio Morricone)

While both scores are justifiably famous, I still think "Jurassic Park" is a much more impressive compositional achievement. Williams here interweaves several very distinct brilliantly-realized styles along with some of his finest themes. To my mind, it is one of THE great film scores. "Schindler's List," while undeniably excellent, had nowhere near as important an effect on its film as this score did; possibly that is because that film was already fantastic without any score and needed little contribution from Williams to make it excel. On the other hand, "Jurassic Park" leans heavily on its score, which provides dynamism, character and depth to an already entertaining movie. "Schindler's List" would have been a great movie without the score; "Jurassic Park" would have been merely entertaining, but, with the music, it is to my mind a genuine classic, one of my ten favorites. Furthermore, I find "Jurassic Park" to be a far more complex and involved composition that is musically much more satisfying.

Still, an excellent review, Christian.
