  Great Stuff

While channel surfing, this movie was playing on some cable channel. I would've kept going, but I was caught by the soundtrack and kept watching. I tuned in during the sound cue referred to as "The Widow's Web," and was hooked by dissonant solo trumpets, aleatoric extended techniques in the strings, microtonal wordless choir, contrabassoon solo (on second listen, I think it's contrabass clarinet), whirly tubes, etc. I would love to see what else was involved - sounds like wind machine, lion's roar, thunder sheet at a minimum... The composition is terrifically inventive, and the orchestration is carefully detailed. Excellent use of extended techniques. Ligeti would have been proud!

On the other hand, there is also the fairly standard action/fantasy brass fanfare and sweeping string line style writing - a little cliche, but very well executed. The only minus is the sloppy and intonationally challenged women's chorus...a second take would probably have been nice!
