What actually happened to Grigorov?

He was brought onto the film, did a score, and then dropped surprisingly late into production? It sounds like studio interference to me - and I've heard some other rumours about that as well with the editing (for example, John Hurt was in the film, and his casting helped with the greenlighting of it, yet he's nowhere to be found in the theatrical cut?) so has anyone any knowledge of this?
