Little Giants: (John Debney) Attention all Debney fans, the buck stops
here. Little Giants represents Debney's best effort behind Cutthroat
Island. Debney's talent with an orchestra, ability to write truly memorable
themes, and knack for writing absolutely fun music all shine brightly in this
score.
The opening track of this CD, as well as much of the music on it, plays just
like an exciting American march. Immediately Debney states his main theme,
which is easily one of the most memorable themes he has composed recently
you'll find yourself whistling it even after you're done listening to the CD.
The horn section, usually reserved for counter-melody in much Debney's work, is
primarily responsible for the performance of the main theme. While other
sections of the orchestra perform the theme throughout the score, with little
twists unique to each section, the moments of brass dominance are very powerful
and are the most enjoyable moments in any CD I've listened to.
The non-march-style cues are also superb. Debney's use of the main theme
throughout these tracks helps to maintain a thematic whole throughout the
various styles of music interspersed on the CD. His characteristic woodwind and
piano solos put the official Debney stamp on this CD. All in all this has
quickly become one of my most treasured CD's in my collection. One must note the
hefty amount of music on this CD (nearly an hour's worth) which makes this CD a
great buy if you can find it at a fair price. Little Giants will not
just surprise the casual listener with its elegance and outright joviality, but
it is a MUST for all fans of John Debney's work. *****
