I know what you mean about the s/t, and the incredible way Howard Shore has "described" the themes or anthem for a race of characters so brilliantly with music.
Thanks by the way for your help with "song entering Rivendell" my fave part of the score. I cant describe the emotion it creates but yes, it brings a tear to the eye every time I hear it - seems to fit the scene exactly somehow. As for other scenes, one of the most moving was Boromir's last stand, the Lament for Gandalf in Lothlorien and the elves travelling west through the shire (extended version).
