First let me state that this score is superb, and overall the review does it justice. But: I cannot understand the comments about there not being a new big theme. There is one: The Gondor theme. As heard in "Minas Tirith", "The White Tree" (and those are big, bombastic statements of that theme!), "The Steward of Gondor (solemnly and moanfully played by horn), and reprised somewhat subdued in "The Return of the King" (where it's shortly followed by a chilling moment of Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) singing a historical verse of his kin at his coronation). BTW, this theme has been hinted at since FotR, where it can be heard by solo horn during Boromir's speech at the Council of Elrond.
"Someday, there will likely be expanded versions of all of these scores released to the public."
'Someday' is in about a year, Howard Shore has stated in an interview over at soundtrack.net that a complete set with all three scores in full, plus extra stuff, is in the works to come out in late 2004. This will contain roughly 12 hours of music on about 9 cds.
