How is the music as presented when one's head is up one's ass?

People need to lighten up, it's great that the rating breakdown is done like this! I don't see how anyone could possibly have a problem with extra free information. He always discusses the differences in the reviews and with that in mind it would be an incomplete writing if he DIDN'T rate each aspect (especially in any case where the reviewer sees such a vast difference between different formats that the sound track is presented in).

Meanwhile, back in on-topic land, I really like this sound track, though it is somewhat of a let down from The Two Towers (mostly from the aforementioned lack of returning themes). Though I have to admit the whole thing has this Wagnerian quality to it if you listen to all three sound tracks in sequence. Instead of each piece being a full film soundtrack it's almost like Fellowship is the build up and beginning of the major battles, Two Towers IS the major battles, and Return of the King is the end of said battles and the resulting reflection and winding down. Obviously it doesn't work like that in the books/films, but from a musical standpoint I think Shore was trying to adopt this overall feel to it so that you could take all three sound tracks as one epic.

I actually somewhat agree with the Fellowship theme not really appearing in here, mainly because the Fellowship in its truest sense is completely broken at this point in the story and not just structurally seperated as in the film Fellowship itself.

As for the good parts, I LOVE the use of the chorus on this cd, I think it builds up better than the Two Towers choral sections and will in all likeliness be more apparent in the film. Foundations of Stone on the TT sound track as an example has great vocal depth to it, but in the film you barely notice this because that Balrog just WON'T SHUT UP. No wonder Gandalf was so angry. The Steward of Gondor on RotK is a fantastic track in this respect. I do think Shore does a great job with the Gondor theme (I actually really enjoy this new theme myself even if it can't compare with the Rohan theme). Gondor kind of gets shafted in the first two films both from a musical and from a film structure standpoint, so it's nice to see a place that we're repeatedly TOLD is so vital finally at the forefront.

Something I really have to disagree on is that thought that the transitions in Minas Tirith are too abrupt. This seems to be more as a reaction to what will probably be a quick change of viewpoint in the film to, something, no spoilers. Once that lush chorus fully kicks in about halfway through the track and ends I think the horns answer it quite well rather than cutting it off. One of the things I like the most about these three sound tracks is the amount of choral and string-oriented depth Shore is able to get into the sound tracks while still respecting the core orchestra. These various elements all feel much more cohesive on here than they would on a sound track by a lesser composer.

That said I do think that there'll be some music we hear in the film that didn't make it onto this cd. I look forward to some sort of uber-expanded version of these, a six cd set couldn't hurt. Reprise could put all the buddy, spyware and screensavers on disk six, which you will only be able to get via a mail-in rebate found only in the Super Hardbound Edition EX Alpha + Champion Edition release of the RotK sound track.

What I wouldn't give to have Varése Sarabande in charge of this...
