Wow! I am kind of amazed by all the bad comments about Annie Lennox's song "Into the West." I simply loved that song, just as I loved all the other songs in the Lord of the Rings.
Though, I have to agree...Annie Lennox's vocals are quite a shock...almost like Emiliana Torrini's for Gollum's Song. I understand how most people would simply say Enya's song--May it Be--was the best because of Enya's very soft
and simple sound. (And yes...I do love Enya; I have two of her CDs.)
I think what made May It Be so great was that Enya also participated in other tracks of FoTR (Aniron) and was able to follow Shore's direction for the score for her song. May It Be really goes well with the other tracks in FoTR.
However, you also have to really love how perfectly Emiliana Torrini freaks you out with her very spooky voice...definitely epitomizing our feelings for Gollum. In this same way, we must apprecieate Annie Lennox's awesome voice (Yes...I have always loved Annie Lennox; her voice seems to have so much more substance and feeling than that of soft Enya.) and how she, in her own way, epitomized the tired but strong feeling of the Elves leaving for the distant shore.
Charlotte Church can't sing with such strength and emotion! I think that Annie Lennox was perfect for the part; she added her only little bit, though different, to the amazing emotions and sounds of Middle Earth.
