...if you think of this as a Hans Zimmer score not a Superman score. As far as originality goes this definitely deserves more credit than the music for Superman II, III & IV which just rehashed the classic John Williams theme. I'm uncertain if Williams' theme (which I adore) would have fit this Superman-On-Steroids approach to the character, however the best score in this franchise outside of the one for the 1978 movie would without a doubt would have to be John Ottman's masterful handling of Superman Returns. If you haven't picked yourself up a copy do yourself a favour and give it a listen. It's a perfect blend of John Williams' themes and new and memorable material from Ottman.
While Zimmer's Man of Steel doesn't quite represent the absolute best music in the series it certainly fits the tone of movie (for good or ill) and is certainly better than the one star review above suggests (and much much better than anything Zack Synder's regular collaborator Tyler Bates would have come up with. I hate bad mouthing hardworking composers in Hollywood but I had to say it). If you're a fan of Zimmer and James Newton-Howard's music for The Dark Knight Trilogy and Zimmer's Inception then you should check out the score for Man of Steel. Just be prepared for a ringing in your ears afterwards.
