Comments about the soundtrack for The Matrix Revolutions (Don Davis)

Guys, guys, guys, don't get me wrong, I LOVE the matrix trilogy. It's perplexing philisophical idealogy juxtaposed against the awesome premise "A.I. enslaving mankind", and ultimately the human spirit and it's will to survive is just fascinating. The acting is actually perfect for this movie as well, despite what most critics will tell you. But the soundtrack was just horrible. It had its moments of stunning force and even some interesting harmonic/melodic/tonal cues that worked, but for the most part Don Davis simply lacks the compositional/musical language to accurately and emotionally describe what is going on in this movie. The music rarely modulates out of the very simple minor scale with accentuation on the same and most predictable tones in each sequence (the 2-3 scale degrees and the 5-6 scale degrees, the only ones with minor second intervals between them). It also employs the completely movie-score cliche octatonic mode to evoke "scary" or "frightening" moments in the movie. But what really got me was the overused minor sequences and very immature and underdeveloped thematic material. Sure, this is a dark movie, lots of the music should reflect the core premise of it i.e., the use of the simple minor scale. And sure, this isn't starwars or a sci-fi thriller that would benefit from cheesy sweeping love themes and stunning leitmotif's or complex, modulating harmonic battle music like in the totally awesome score for Independence Day. But there were certainly a lot of moments where an array of musical ideas should of been considered that weren't and instead were replaced with crappy, predictable and overused horn cues ascending on minor diatonic scale tones. Don Davis also had a couple of opportunities to embellish with a few orchestral swells in this music as the emotions were pumped up on screen. Of course, they weren't taken. Again, this score definitely has it's moments! And the movie is visually stunning and equally dense in philosophy and a very complex story line that utilizes technological analogies of life and even the meaning of it! WOW! . . . the score, subsequently should have been one of equal complexity and emotion. Also, where this music rarely works in the movie, it surely doesn't hold its own in the soundtrack alone.
