This score was absolutely BRILLIANT! My long lame review...

I might sound like an all new complete The Mummy Returns gusher but this score really out did what I originally expected. It was like The Mummy meets Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Back to the Future in every way possible.

Originally, (like most) I was very disappointed that Jerry Goldsmith who's score to The Mummy in which I loved "yada yada yada" wasn't going to score The Mummy Returns (blah blah blah, we've heard that complaint before but now it's invalid ). Though learning that Alan Silvestri was about to score it got me very curious about the results. Well my confidence payed off bigtime.

The enormous brass action sequences are very reminiscant of Back to the Future (though sometimes I feel that Silvestri copies himself a bit too much sometimes, but that's okay since his themes are so memerable).

Gone are the short ambient sounds that Goldsmith regulary uses for suspenseful sequences which are usually in his infamous "synthesised" format, Silvestri uses a unique tune in every cue possible.

Most of the action sequeces are most memerable in their compilation form in the closing score track on track 18.

The love theme (better heard on track 4, "Just an Oasis") is not surprisingly very different to Goldsmith's love theme in the original but at least Silvestri used two different themes for the duel relationship in the film unlike what Goldsmith did and just used the same theme for both sets of characters. The two love themes within TMR are very similar in terms of key and instruments played, but they're easy to tell apart since Rick and Evy's theme gets a big number in track 12 "Medjai Commanders".


The real highlight of the soundtrack is track 13 "Evy Remembers", which the scene it's scored for reveals some very interesting plot details layed out in "black and white" in Evy's visions of her past life in Ancient Egypt. I just love how Silvestri was able to rescore the scene where Seti the 1st gets stabbed to death from the first film retold through Evy's eyes. Worth checking out.

If you haven't seen the film, I won't tell you what happens in the scene in which track 17 "Come Back Evy" was scored it!...though you'll find thats it's a very powerful moment in the soundtrack that earned my dollar.....c'mon you must have figued what the scene is about now...


One of my disappointments was that the final battle isn't present on the CD at all. A sense of closure isn't felt at all after track 17 which is big shame.

But lord only knows why the song "Forever May Not Be Long Enough" was even passed for the soundtrack at all. It's awful and pitiful even!! There was so much that could have been done with a song if they were going to have one but now I realize that the new music of the Naughties is going to suck bad compared to some well written songs of the Nineties. It even appears in the end credits of the film which I had no choice but to walk out on. But still, at least most of the great parts of the score are on this lavish CD so there are no regrets.

What would have Goldsmith done with the score for TMR? Lord knows what. If they have potential scores in heaven that represent what could have been, I'll be one of the first to listen to this one when I die.

But Silvestri's score for TMR will be one I'll be hearing in my head for a very long time...
