I completely agree with you. Goldsmith's score had a sense of mystery about it, of exploring the unknown. The Mummy Returns' score, much like the movie itself, lost that air of mystery.
Goldsmith's score was also far more original, VARIED and "intelligent", not to mention the fact it more closely resembled what was happening on-screen.
