First I start by stating that I've never heard anything as effective nor scary horror score as this. Jerry Goldsmith's Oscar was absolutely and rightfully deserved, and it's a testament to Goldsmith's ability to bring something special to a film such as The Omen. It would be easy to just say that this is Goldsmith's best score in horror-genre (it is!), for it is much more than that. Much more.
The Omen (1976) does contain few of the late maestros best ideas. The score combines terrifying choir singing satanic texts in latin to a tragically beautiful family-theme that represents the Thorn family. The choral moments themselves are uniqe and special in their own right ("Ave Satani", "Broken Vows", "The Killer Storm" and "The Dogs Attack" all are kind of mini symphonies within the rest of the album) but it is the development of the family-theme ("The New Ambassador") that keeps the listener interested. The theme turns more and more tragic all the time the album's tracks are getting closer to the end, and the listener knows things aren't going to end well...
The score comes to climactic close in the nineteenth track ("The Altar") that raises the choral and thematic material to apocalyptic hights. After the score's end comes a beautiful song based on the family-theme and sung by Goldsmith's wife Carol. It brings certain kind of weird optimistic feeling after the horrific events in the story, and it really is a nice and beautiful song.
This album comes highly recommended! It really is a beautifully horrifying experience. Containing 20 tracks in film order and playing 49 minutes it properly shows how Goldsmith developed the thematic material.
And this is the best horror score Goldsmith ever wrote.
