IF I NEVER.... rejected love theme   Thursday, July 17, 2003 (7:18 a.m.)

"The pop song "If I Never Knew You" is a useless, commercial addition to the end of the album"

Maybe. But it was originally a LOVE THEME in a scene later rejected (available thru DVD), and we can hear the melody in the score at the finale in lovers' farewell scene.

I purchased the Laser Disc version of Pocahontas which, as many know, contains TONS of extra material. One highlight is the actual annimated sequence of 'If I Never Knew You' performed by Pocahontas and John Smith the night before the execution. Frankly, the love song performed containes the same energy and gravity that made 'A Whole New Wolrd' and 'Beauty and the Beat' memorable. I hear it's gonna be remastered and integrated into the upcoming Special Edition DVD release this 2005. I actually have the MP3 of the song being performed by Mel Gibson and Judy K which you can find in the internet.

On the special edition DVD of Pocahontas not only have they inserted If I Never Knew You back into the film, making the film more romantic and complete in my opinion, but they have also inserted the reprise at the end of the film. Something, I wasn't aware existed. It occurs roughly around the time that Pocahontas kisses John goodbye, they both sing a little bit of the song to each other. It was a pleasant surprise when I was watching it. I'll keep my fingers crossed that they release a Special Edition Soundtrack when the DVD finally hits America.
