Worth buying?   Saturday, September 25, 2004 (6:39 p.m.)

If I own the three scores already, is this album different or interesting enough to make it worth purchasing in addition?

Also, anyone have any idea when or if Shore's Lord of the Rings Symphony will be released?

Being somebody who is extremely critical of re-recordings, ESPECIALLY when it comes to my favorite scores, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by this set. While some tempos are a bit awkward, the overall performance is very good.

It's definitely worth your $$$.

Take care,

Christian

To answer your first question, it depends on your level of enthusiasm about the scores. If you just want the music, then the soundtracks you already have should suffice. However, if you want to hear a fresh and alternate interpretation by one of the leading performing orchestras around, then yes, it's worth it. Although nothing can ever quite overtake the originals (much like Williams's Star Wars music), the performances by the Prague Philharmonic are excellent and they allow you to hear Shore's complex and layered orchestrations a little differently. In regards to your second question, I have heard that when the complete versions of the scores are released on album sometime next year, that the set will contain an extra DVD of Shore's perfomance of the Symphony with (I believe) the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. This is great news since that would enable us to hear the performance, presumably, in 5.1 digital surround sound. Having heard Shore's performance with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus myself, I can't wait till it finally comes out! The only thing I worry about is the price of this set, since it would probably bring the total number of discs to between 7 and 9!
