well i'll admit that James Newton Howard's 2006 score for Lady in the Water was a rather big suprise...though the film blew big...the score was excellent...nothing academy award worthy...but enjoyable...but Badelt's The Promise is a big suprise...and for the most part i hate the media venture scores and find their writing, chord progression to be unimagenative and a creative flop...i mean it was great w/ Zimmer's 1995 Crimson tide...but 12yrs later i'm hearing the same chord progression w/ not only zimmer but now i can't find a media venture composer who is original in anyway...perhaps i'm too narrow minded...but Harry Gregson williams, john powell, trevor rabin etc...they all are a major disappointment and should really be fired from the business...yet still i'm just waiting for the day when we get a media venture member who's studied composition actually, and we'll get a John Williams score outta him/her....prolly never will happen...i don't think i've ever heard a 16th or 32nd not outta a media venture score ever! Anyway, while The Promise holds the same faults that the rest of Badelts scores have...i can't deny the beauty of the performance it's given here, which really should send a message to them...SYNTH MUSIC SUX! You don't need to be a complex composer (though that does make the listening experience much more full,exciting and better really), but use a full orchestra...a little synth is fine, no prob...but when u have entire sections of orchestra subsituted w/ harsh synth...i really really get pissed and confirms the fact that the scores of the future will never live up to what they were.
