It's no wonder Mr. Clemmensen didn't enjoy the score. He states in one of his sentences (in the 2nd paragraph) that he thinks the score functions poorly outside of the film, just like Silence of the Lambs, thus deadening the listening experience.

Silence of the Lambs is still my favorite of the three scores just because it is such a fascinating listen APART from the film. Howard Shore's score seems boring on the first few listens, but over time you begin to dig down into the musical textures and realize what hauntingly surreal beauty lies there. . . The same will probably lie true for Elfman's Red Dragon.

You cannot review a score for a Hannibal movie not expecting some dark underscore; that's what makes the three scores great and Christian needs to realize this, I think, and give Elfman more credit for his efforts.

Thanks for this comment Jockolantern! After reading Christian's review I sank into despair but now I can see the hope on the horizon :-) I haven't heard Elfman's score yet, but The Silence of the Lambs is also one of my favourite, so Red Dragon can't be so lousy as it seems to be...
