To my opinion Hannibal and Red Dragon are both great scores, and they fit both perfectly with the movie. Hannibal also is another type of movie than Red Dragon. Hannibal is about Hannibal Lecter, he is the main character in that movie, and not in red Dragon, where he's an additional character. The music of "Hannibal" fits perfectly with the character of Hannibal Lecter, he's a real artist, you know! So they're very good. And I think that the weakest score of whole the series is Silence of The Lambs, not very well orchestrated to my feeling....

Or would you've been more pleased with a score from James Horner, with a theme of Braveheart, or Bicentennial man, or A Beautiful Mind....

I think you cant say that these 2 are the best composers this time. i think hans zimmer has a completely other style than in this chase elfman. You CANNOT campare them.
So you cant say what ve been better.Elfman would also be able to show you the artistic side of hannibal and so far.
Image John Williams had orchestrated this picture.I think this sountrack would also be a very great one.His diversity in his underscoring is just amazing , for example in Minority Report he showed us that he´s able to write more than amazing action hymnes and the other thematical stuff we know from him.

I think you missed the point in that last reply. He wasn't comparing Zimmer and Elfman, but rather just saying that they both are the best composers at the moment. Their differences probably even support that arguement.

However, i think you are right about john williams, and although my personal favourite is hans zimmer, i think critically john williams is actually a better composer, because his melodies have a much more universal emotional appeal and many more of his works have become remembered than Zimmer's (I know he's been in the business longer than Zimmer, but still i think his style remains true to that statement).

Also, don't forget Ennio Morricone - Zimmer's inspiration! He is magnificent, and is still churning out great modern music as well as his golden older stuff.
