No doubt in my mind, from the moment I first heard this music while watching the movie, that Conti brillianly stuck Chopin's "Military Polonaise" and Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto into a blender, and came out with this beautiful main theme. The author of this article does mention Tchaikovsky but fails to mention Chopin, which surprises me for it should be obvious. I'm also surprised at the degree and harshness of the criticism. This score made the movie go and earned its Oscar in every sense of the word.
