It is a German folk song, Der Fr÷hliche Wanderer (The Happy Wanderer)
You can find the German lyrics --> http://ingeb.org/Lieder/MeinVate.html

Here is where the English version is --> http://www.lyricstalk.com/read.php?1,64205,64205,quote=1

I hate not being able to get the name or lyrics to a song, too.

Actually, it's not a German folk song. It was written after WWII and performed widely by a children's choir. You can find out more on wikipedia under "Happy Wanderer."
