I agree with most of Chris' review. On the whole the CD is a bit long, and the enthusiasm can get overwhelming. However I thought the jazzy nature of the score, the constant rhythm and that very same enthusiasm are what makes the music, as a whole very appealing. This is a fun score, one that can't help but pass it's energy on to the listener.

In that way it is very much like "The Incredibles". Both scores are on the long side and both scores share that energy. In fact you could take your favorite moments from both scores and make a single 60's style jazz album that would be pure fun.

I do agree that the thematic material isn't very developed, and I suspect that this has more to do with the film itself and not Giacchino's work (his themes are well developed in "The Incredibles".

"Speed Racer" is an energetic, jazzy and fun score. I think that the "fun" part is what is so appealing to me. Headache inducing? I disagree. Relentless - yes, and listening to the entire album in a single sitting can be a bit trying. Instead it's a perfect candidate for a selection of 60's style jazz scores (including "The Incredibles" and the classic James Bond scores).

4 out of 5 stars from me!
