As most of the film score critics have stated Star Trek: The Motion Picture is one of the most classic film scores ever composed. Jerry Goldsmith has truly found the very heart of the Trek movies with his composition. The gamut of different themes and motives is stunning: Ilia's theme, Main Title, Klingon theme, Vejur's motif and Spock's theme all are superb and altogether quite memorable. Someone has written this score sounds and feels like an opera and I am willing to agree; especially "The Enterprise" sounds quite operatic as it reveals the size and grandiosity of the star ship.
Goldsmith's additional usage of electronics and exotic sounds with symphony orchestra has been well known and Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a good example of that. Craig Huxley's blaster beam adds mystery and strange kind of awe to the music. On the whole I would suggest that the electronics here are used as well as in Goldsmith's score to Legend.
Along such works as John William's Star Wars saga and Howard Shore's The Lord of the Rings trilogy Star Trek: The Motion Picture is one of the milestones of film music and stands well the test of time. The late maestro Goldsmith should have easily earned an Academy Award for this. This is surely one of Goldsmith's best!
