The new release   Thursday, July 30, 2009 (1:49 p.m.)

After the original CD release, fans clamoured for more. An extended bootleg was released with some awkward DVD-ripping and so, for a time, the fans were sated.

Then, FSM decided to release this re-mastered CD and what a welcome addition to their catalogue it is. After ST: The Motion Picture, which was slow and boring but with a majestic "exploration" score by Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner was hired to create something somewhat different. An edgier, battle-driven score that had to highlight the horror in the film as well as the "ships in fog" space battle finale. This re-release is fantastic - it has never sounded better, I would even say not even on DVD. I am an enormous Jerry Goldsmith fan, and love his themes (particuarly those for the Next Gen films and main titles for the TV series he was involved with) but I think Horner was proved to be the correct choice. I urge all those with a love of film music to get this CD - it's a fantastic experience that you'll repeat time and again.
