Must we attach a ranking to each great theme or can we simply appreciate them? *NM*   Thursday, January 9, 2003 (5:44 p.m.)

I agree. Rating the themes is such a trivial and ultimately superficial thing to do. If anything with this site, I've found that the reviews are boring and focus at length sometimes on the history of past recordings when they should be telling about the individual cues. I thought this was a site about "FILM MUSIC". Let us discuss the film, and music, and (here's a shocker) let's discuss how they match up. Let's even try to figure out why. We could begin by discussing the melodic-harmonic relationship. Let's not forget rhythm. We could then move into the realm of orchestration. And finally dramatic scoring techniques. Or, you know what, f@#* it, that's not really essential to a site porporting to be about film scores. Let's get bogged down by how "crisp" and "clean" the recording is. Let's glibly throw out words like "masterful" and "genius" and then try to figure out the best score of 1994 because that's what's really important and that's what people want to learn about.

Well, you're right in your own mind. My mind says that Superman is a better theme. But that's my opinion and I acknowledge that. You probably should keep that in mind. What you said is your opinion stated as though it were fact and that is not really in very good taste.
I agree that Star Wars is a great theme and the many leitmotivs that John has written to compliment the films are also wonderful works. Just not my favorite. Doesn't mean that you have to like it any less, just be careful trying to force your opinion as though it were fact. Because, in the end, the popular view is that opinion is irrelevant. It is all about the facts, and opinion cannot fall under the realm of fact except to say that it is a fact that your opinion is what your opinion is. Confused yet?? I'm getting there, so I'll stop now. Take care and happy listening.

Superman theme wipes the floor with Star Wars. Triumphant, shining and uplifting. However, Star Wars has the edge for that massive chord stab at the end which re-introduces the theme for the credits.

Hmmm.

Lets see, even though the themes are similar, each theme is very unique. I personally think the Star Wars theme is overplayed and overrated , I like the medley of themes that make it up (though you could legitimately say the same thing about almost every other John Williams' themes), however what makes Superman cool in the concert version, that is, is the brass intro that hearkens to the same emotions as a Fanfare for the Common Man by Aaron Copland or Sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss (aka 2001: Space Odyssey theme).

Also, the last musical bars of the Star Wars theme could be very annoying (The slow whining strings of the Rebel Fanfare demonstrate how the rebel fanfare just SHOULDN'T BE PERFORMED THAT WAY!) while the ending of Superman is more slick sounding, albeit rushed.

So to grade theme together would be a mistake, but Superman is a refreshing change of pace, while Star Wars is ingrained in the pop culture, thus canceling out Superman and some of his lesser known themes.

>come on, now. Star Wars theme is pretty cool and give it some credit.
HOWEVER, the John williams Superman theme song's the most powerful theme song I have ever heard and to this day, it still gives me goosebumps and it's just a friggin' master piece and I want that theme song to be in the revamped movie of superman and I don't care what any other ignorant fool says about superman(specifically from the haters) and to prove that the Superman really is a cool character. Honestly, It wouldn't feel the same without that theme song. It's gotta have it because that is superman's song, man!

I'm not saying the star wars theme sucks, which it clearly doesn't. But I'm saying it is right next to the superman theme, though.
