The interesting thing about the X-Files cue is this: It comes from an album called Mozart TV on which various TV themes are arranged and performed in the style of various more or less classical performers. (The people behind this CD also created two much better ones, featuring various Disney songs in the style of various more or less classical performers). The X-Files Theme is in the style of Hovhaness, and the reason it does not sound like a faithful rendition that brings out the character of the original is quite simply that it isn't supposed to. Why it was included on this compilation, though, is a mystery to me.
