What do donated reviews look like?

Donated reviews typically range from 500 to 700 words in length, and appear very similar to the regular reviews you read at Filmtracks all the time. If you donate a review for a listing that Filmtracks already features, then your review will appear immediately after the original Filmtracks review. For example, see JFK or Terminator 2. Sometimes, listings can include three or four donated reviews, such as Mulan or Saving Private Ryan. If no previous review exists for a score that receives a donated review, then the donated review stands where a regular Filmtracks one normally would. For instance, see The Matrix or Amazing Stories.

Yes, you can choose the detail of the credits you receive at the end of the review. Some people like including their name, e-mail and home page URL, while others would prefer to remain anonymous. Most people choose to include their name and e-mail address. Please indicate your choice for credit at the end of any reviews you submit.

Yes, just like a regular Filmtracks review, please include a "star rating" at the end of your review. All scores are ranked on a one to five star basis. Please refrain from using a 1/2 (half) star in your rating, because we won't be able to incorporate the 1/2 part into future cataloging systems.

You can send your donated reviews to the Filmtracks webmaster, Christian Clemmensen. Time permitting, he'll send an immediate reply acknowledging the review's arrival. If he has any questions about the review (or your name inclusion/exclusion option), he'll contact you regarding that. There's no need to send track listings, cover art, or other information with the donated reviews; Filmtracks has most of that already here (in fact, we have many pages ready to go for new listings, but we simply don't have the time to write and insert the reviews so we can publish those pages). In some rare cases, we might need some help tracking down extra information about an album's release.

If it's an additional review for a listing that already exists at Filmtracks, it's possible to publish the donated review within 24 hours. For reviews of scores that don't currently appear at Filmtracks, it might take up to 72 hours. We try hard to notify all donators of our progress in getting the review online. Reviews of the most current releases are of the highest priority in publication.

From the examples of donated reviews on the pages linked above, you can get a good idea of the industry standard for online review quality. Often times, we receive commentary of 150 - 200 words about a score and we determine that these are quick feedback notes about a review rather than a formal review for publication. As can be expected, basic English grammar and understandability are needed for any donated review. If the review seems like casual feedback, then we generally don't publish it. If you wish, you can put the words "Donated Review" in the subject of the e-mailed review you send us, so we know right off the bat the nature of your contribution.

Unfortunately, other than the credit of having your name appear on Filmtracks listings, we don't yet have the resources to provide compensation for donated reviews. Currently the 25 or so Filmtracks visitors who have donated reviews have done so because of their enthusiasm for the site, as well as the opportunity to have their reviews read by thousands of people every month. Hopefully, if all goes well, we can offer compensation in the future.
