Review status: first half of 2013   Saturday, July 20, 2013 (9:22 a.m.)

Existing in a state between hibernation and moribundity, Filmtracks has experienced a series of setbacks in 2013 due to real life challenges that I have faced since moving to Wyoming at the start of the year. A migration to a lesser server and a cutback in album coverage are the most obvious of these consequences.

Due to a shortage of quality housing in Rock Springs, Wyoming, the Filmtracks office is still split between a tiny apartment bedroom in Rock Springs and a pair of storage units back in Montana, though I am endeavoring to find a better dwelling locally within the next three months. Once the parts of the office are reassembled in one place, some of the projects on hold for the site can commence, time permitting.

My original review goals for 2013 included a projection for 50 all-new reviews and 30 re-writes. These numbers have proven somewhat unrealistic, with only 15 new reviews and 13 re-writes completed in the first six months. This shortfall is owed to two months, January and April, that featured absolutely no writing. July has been the most productive month of the year for new reviews, however, so overall production by the end of 2013 could be in the vicinity of the goals. There remain three 2012 scores I still intend to cover during this time.

Financially, Filmtracks' move to a slower server in May, despite the headaches it has caused in the maintenance of the site, has alleviated most of the problems on the balance sheet. Traffic has increased throughout the year and the site looks as though it will at least break even in 2013. Keeping the company solvent and operational has been tremendously difficult since I unexpectedly lost my job in Montana last year, but the worst appears to be over.

Several larger projects involving the site are on indefinite hold, including a moderate redesign with a new logo, mobile template capabilities, and new audio features. All of my limited efforts on Filmtracks at the moment are focused on maintaining a minimal level of coverage so that the site can continue to attract enough traffic to pay for itself.

It has to be mentioned that a thriving Scoreboard community has been key to Filmtracks' viability during these tough times. The forum is much more active now than it was five years ago, with new participants joining the group on a regular basis. I extend my thanks to especially the veterans of the Scoreboard who have held the venue together during my frequent absences. The odd humor of the place, thankfully, never ceases.
