Hollywood '96 (Joel McNeely conducting)

Hollywood '96 (Joel McNeely conducting) Joel McNeely continues his streak of incredible releases with this collection of 1996 themes. The sound quality is once again exceptional, and the selections are well-arranged. The collection of scores represented may not be as stellar as on the 1995 collection --there are a few scores that deserved a performance by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. But individually, the performances of Mission Impossible, Twister, Emma, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Independence Day are excellent. A few surprises: Sabrina was a 1995 release, and I wonder if it appears here only to satisfy some need for a John Williams selection. There was no Williams selection on last year's release, and in all honestly, it adds little extra to this year's collection. On the other hand, I want to praise McNeely on the inclusion of his re-recording of Vertigo, which is a great rendition of Bernard Hermann's classic score. Overall: a really good buy (even though it wins an award for worst cover art of the year). ****
