Really, I agree with Christian that the later tracks contain some great music. But that's no reason to ignore the earlier cues. "The Submarine" contains the boldest performance of the main theme, and was heard in two of the Atlantis trailers. While "Milo's Turned Down" is quite mickey mousey, "Atlantis Is Waiting" gives a sense of building tension and excitement. "The Leviathan" is one of the CD's few action cues, and Howard prooves once again that his pounding, intense action music is all but unmatched. "Bedding Down" is rather quiet, but "The Journey" offers us some truely heroic and majestic performances of the title theme which lead into "Fireflies," another good action Cue.
I say, listen to the CD starting with track 2, the first score track, and let yourself be immersed in yet another fantastic James Newton Howard score. ****½

I have to agree, DON'T SKIP TRACKS 2-8!

They set up the remaining music, and, in their own right, contain great music. There is a little device called DEVELOPMENT that is lacking in most of today's scores (Pearl Harbor for instance), that is what the first 8 tracks lend to this GRAND score.

Incidently, I thought the first score track (2) WAS the music used in the long trailer for the film, but then I could be wrong.

Go out and get this score!

It was in the teaser trailer, which was in Emperor's New Groove, and the Full Trailer on the Dinosaur DVD and in several films. The third trailer, in Shrek, uses Randy Edelman's score for Daylight instead.

I was thinking about buying this sound track. I agree I just saw the trailer for Artifical Intelligence, that sounds like some great music! I think now after reading the comments here, I should go and buy the tracks. I have one of Howards sound tracks from E.R. that is great music! What other sound tracks has he written for? Please E-mail me if anyone knows.

He has done many other quality scores such as Dinosaur, Dave, Waterworld, The Postman, The Fugitive, The Sixth Sense, Snow Falling on Cedars, The Devil's Advocate, Outbreak, Restoration, The Prince of Tides, Space Jam, etc. I think almost all of these are still available for purchase. I hope this helps you out.

He also did Vertical limit, Wyatt Earp, the Man on the Moon, and he wrote the main themes for Dante's Peak and Liar Liar as well.

Franly saying, this score reminded me of "The Abyss" by Alan Silvestri. I think that many people will not agree with me, but I do see some similarity. And since I liked the later score, I definitely like the whole score to "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" by James Newton Howard. I haven't watched the movie yet, but the music itself is very beautiful.

I hate to disagree with Christian on this one, but for me, big bombastic cues and brass explosions are some of my favorite pieces, and the first 8 tracks (except track 1) are fantastic. My favorite is track 2, The Submarine. What a great theme Howard created. But don't get me wrong. I found that the second half was very good as well, just not as exciting and energetic as the first half. Nonetheless a great score. I'm glad I bought it.
