I'm sure someone will disagree (and that's fine), but judging by the soundtrack alone and not the entire 2.5 hr movie, this is John Williams' weakest score in the Star Wars Saga. Before you throw your hands up in disgust, realize that I DO like the score, however. I like the transition that Williams makes between the old trilogy and the new. AOTC brings in the Imperial March, not heard in TPM. It also brings Duel of the Fates and The Droid Invasion themes from TPM.
On the other hand, the new material is less than stellar. The new love theme, "Across the Stars", is good, but doesn't hold a candle to Han and Leia's theme. Also, the action/battle music is less thematic than TPM, though still interesting. The problem I have is that it is too similar to Harry Potter. The 2nd half of "Love Pledge and The Arena" could easily be switched with Harry Potter's "Quiddich Match".
As with TPM, I'm sure Williams' score to AOTC will have a MUCH greater effect in the movie than on the CD. In addition, there is about 2.5 hrs of music in the movie, and only 74 minutes on CD. In conclusion, it's a must-buy for Williams and Star Wars fans.
