Hello! This is the profile page for "the other Joe" who took the name A Different Joe since the name Joe was already taken, I'm told. He's an enigmatic character, A Different Joe; no one knows that much about him, even me. I do know that his first post here was either June or July 2002, so he's relatively new. NEW INFO: I went back and read all my early posts (lol I'm a loser, I know!) and my OFFICIAL FILMTRACKS BIRTHDAY is August 6th! Yay! Hmmmm....that's like 2 days after my parent's anniversary...........

He tells me it all started back in 1995 at the age of 9 years old when he went to see Apollo 13 in the theater and noticed how powerful the music was, but it wasn't until early 2001, when he rented The Shadow that he decided to listen to film scores. Another first for him was noticing Elliot Goldenthal's Batman Forever theme when he bought the movie on tape. Now both of us have something else to spend our hard-earned money on besides Paintball! Jerry Goldsmith remains his favorite composer to this day, although he's starting to like James Newton Howard a lot.

Besides film music, he listens to progressive rock bands like Dream Theater, Transatlantic, Yes, and Jethro Tull. He's also a fan of a little-known metal band out of Houston, TX, called Galactic Cowboys.

Other interests of his include "Oh no, it happened again! What you have just seen is one of my other personalities. He's considered quite eccentric and I don't let him out often. Don't worry, it's the real me now!"

Other interests of mine include reading, playing computer (especially Star Wars flight sims and WARCRAFT III: REIGN OF CHAOS!!!!), watching movies, sleeping, and eating. My favorite authors are Brian Daley, Timothy Zahn, Greg Bear, and Clive Cussler.

Ok, what should it!
Why I don't like John Williams that much: style. Call me a stick in the mud, but I don't like the most popular composer in film score history. Stick in the mud! Why? I just don't like the way he composes. You can usually tell a composer by their unique style, and I just don't go for John Williams's style. There are exceptions (ie: the ones in my collection), but for the most part, it starts with Star Wars. Maybe it's just my habit to be contrary, but I just don't LIKE it! I did when I was younger, and maybe it's because I listened to it too much. John Williams is just not for me....

Varese Sarabande: 45min should be the MINIMUM length ANY score should have PERIOD! I've heard all about the virtues of Varese, but if you're going to print out a score, it better not be 30min unless it's extraordinarily BAD! Or, if it sells enough, they could put out a second edition or something with more music (like The Sixth Sense...if any score deserves to get a longer running time, it's the Sixth Sense). One good thing they've done is the deluxe editions, but they take too long to put out (when will we see The Sixth Sense: The Deluxe Edition? I'm guessing after 2006). I think it all comes down to Varese trying to save some money. Granted, putting a score out isn't cheap, but sometimes taking risks can reap beautiful rewards. I think someone said that once: "You don't get successful by not taking risks" or something like that. I think that if they had put out a longer release for Air Force One, for instance, it would have sold a lot more copies, mostly because people on wouldn't complain as much. Look at The 13th Warrior: absolutely NO ONE went to the movie, but Varese, anticipating a box office smash, gave it a 55min length (and boy am I glad they did!). 30-39min-WAY TOO SHORT
40-49min-eh, kinda short, good for scores w/ not a lot of diversity
50-59min-medium length.
60-69min-wow. Pretty long!
60-79min-YEAH THIS IS FREAKING LONG!!!! WOO HOOO!!!!! Great for really good scores
80+min-gonna need 2 discs unless they make cheaper discs with longer running time. 2 discs interrupt the whole listening experience thing.

On record labels in general:

length-mid to long.

cd quality-poor to fair: they have these little strips on the outside edge

of the cd which you can pull off. They can bend inward and affect the play

of the cd and make it skip. Cover art pretty much sucks (come on! One

color?), though they usually give composer credits. A nice thing on the

new 2002 ones is that they have track listing. That's a good thing.


length-pretty good. Long for the most part

cd quality-about the same as Hollywood, but the cd art is better than

Hollywood. No track listing on any that I've seen, but then again, I don't

have a lot of them.

Varese Sarabande:

length-I'm thinking the average length for a Varese is somewhere around

40min. They have some good long scores, but a LOT of really really short


cd quality-very good! The cd doesn't strip, and slides out of the cd wallet

w/out any problems, hardly makes a sound either. Good cd art too, though no

track listing.


length-dunno, don't have too many of these. Long to very long (from

the ones that I have)

cd quality-very good. Slides in and out better than Varese cd's and there

are no sharp/rough edges anywhere on the cd. All rounded corners (not to

suggest that cd's have corners, but you know what I mean). CD art could be

better. Again, I don't have too many of these, but of the 4 I do have

(including my bro's Jurassic Park), 1 just has art, not even the name of the

movie, and 3 don't have composer credits (I hate that). Also, the art

itself isn't that good (esp. Waterworld). No track listing on any of mine.

Well those were just the major ones that I have a lot of. I want to make it clear that the most important thing to me on a cd is length. My personal favorite cd art is *shiny* with the cd logo and full composer credits. Whenever I burn something, I make a cd art thingy based on the top part of A Beautiful Mind and the bottom part based on Signs. Best way to do it, in my honest opinion.

Scores near and dear to my heart:
The Shadow (Goldsmith)-because it got me interested in film music
Dune (Revell)-because it was the first score I ever bought, followed closely by The Fellowship of the Ring (Shore)
The Time Machine (Badelt)-because before I watched that movie, I wouldn't buy composers who didn't have the last names of Williams, Horner, and Goldsmith. Well I'm sure everyone has gone through a stage like that...
