I found this comment in James Berardinelli's review:

"...set to depressingly uninspired music by Tyler Bates that makes one yearn with painful desperation for Basil Poledouris' classic score..."

I think that about sums it up. Berardinelli does list Conan as being his 10th favorite score of all time, in the spirit of full disclosure (http://www.reelviews.net/reelthoughts.php?identifier=302).
