Havin heard the score for Frida i was impressed. Having heard the score for Final Fantasy i was won over as an Elliot goldenthal fan.Floating Bed is a huge change from his sobre adagios!! But then i came to Sphere. What Happened?
As i've seen the film i know the music he composed was actually really good . So where is it ? its not on the album. Well some of it is. U get about a minute of decent music at the beggining of each track and then it goes into sound effect mode lots of rumblings and no music.
Another thing is it does not tell the story. The track numbering should be like this:
1. Main theme - This is good
2. THe Gift - This is even better
3. Terror Adagio- only the first half of it though the second half comes much later in the film. The first half is good. the second half should b but the best bits r missing.
4. Visit to a Wreckage - Wat a loada crap. There was about 2 mins of great music b4 this in the film y not release that !?!
5. Entry Event - loud
6. Discovery - A little more music needed instead of silence!!!
7. Fear Retrieval - just about brearable
8. Manifest Fire - Begins well
9. Water Snake - I dunno wats goin on here. Its completely different from the film!!! The first coherent part should be inbetween 6 & 7 and the last part i don't remember hearing at all.
10. Andante - Boring !!!
11. Wave - Even More boring
12. Manifest^3 - It starts brilliantly then goes crap. Wheres the heroic conclusion to this track!?!
I dunno where to put track Pandora's Fanfare and Thier Best within as they don't actually appear in the film.
In short this score is more of a collection of arrangements. It doesn't tell the story of the film and most of the best bits are missed out. the sound effects of bangin drums an screaching trumpets are intolerable. And all the heroic moments are missed out. Manifest 3 should be brilliant but instead all the heroism in the music has been chopped off and sound effects in its place.
Is there any other release of Sphere out there that has the good stuff on it???
