I must admit that i prefer the harry potter series to Star Wars. I think that some of the star wars tracks are simply pathetic, for instance in A New Hope, the music for the little robot things in the beginning. The HP music is much more subtle, as well, even though it is for children.
Even the best of Star Wars (ie. Imperial March, Throne Room) are nothing compared to "Buckbeat's Flight" (Prisoner of Azkaban) or "Harry's Wondrous World".
And, thinking about it, neither of the mentioned soundtracks are as superb as the LOTR soundtracks.

I don't think so, "Star Wars" was so unique in its style and orchestration and "Harry Potter" was just different from it. First of all, there is no meaning in making comparisons between two excellent soundtrack albums. John Williams was at his best and deserved to be nominated for Academy award.
