When I bought this album, I was kind of expecting to hear something similar to the Tangerine Dream score for the American version of the film, which I wasn't very impressed with. However, I was completely blown away by the sheer intensity and massive power of Jerry Goldsmith's beautiful score!
First, I have to commend the orchestrations for this score--Goldsmith successfully weaves together the pure sounds of the orchestra and mystical synthesizers which are used to a brilliant extent to evoke the otherworldly mood of a fairy tale world.
There a few stand out cues in the score, including:
The "Main Titles" cue (the synthesizers give me goosebumps!)
"Faerie Dance", which begins with a stately fiddle solo and gradually crescendoes into a wild romp of strings, brass, and percussion (VERY EXCITING!)
"The Dress Waltz", another dance sequence that starts softly and delicately and builds up into a nice flowing melody that literally spins out of control when accompanied by frantic strings and choir.
And "Darkness Fails", which is the ULITMATE action cue! It exhibits the power of every aspect of this score--synths, strings, winds, brass, percussion, and choir. It all adds up to a pulse-pounding climax!
Overall, Jerry Goldsmith's score for "Legend" is nothing short of a masterpiece. It is simply dazzling from start to finish! It fits perfectly with Ridley Scott's original version of the film, which I think would have been better off untampered with. This is a true epic fantasy score!
