But I just can't see what's so great about this score. Sure, the theme is... well... pretty, but I find the rest of the score to be a bit dull.

I prefer Portman's Chocolat and her theme for The Cider House Rules. Those are better scores in my opinion. For nice (and sometimes beautiful) piano themes, you can count on almost any Rachel Portman score. But as for the rest of the scores, I guess they lack something. I don't know what, but they do.

Hey, C. Hook, as you said in your comment in other words, it sounds like there was that main "captivating" theme all the time present in her scores, but as though always somewhat alone, finding itself languishing away slowly but surely after series of repeated listens. I have this major problem with the "Cider House Rules" soundtrack that enthralled me right away by its main theme when I first heard it in the flick, but after a while --after having bought myself a copy of the CD-- I began finding myself "tired" after listening to her stuff instead of being supposedly (and intentionally!) caressed by Rachel's music. I hate to say it but I hesitatingly put off purchasing "Chocolat" soundtrack as fearing to experience the same sort of lastly uninvited outgrowth as I have with "Cider". But maybe I gauge her music overly acutely; maybe Williams' music has already grown fastidiousness in me. Well, I don't even think it's an act of fairness to compare these two composers between one another, besides am I right if I say that Rachel we should treat since being one of the rare female composers on the battlefield surrounded by big male names.
What I strongly wish they would do some day would be a compilation with Rachel's music and her tidy dollop of central movie themes she's conjured up so far. But it can't seem to be within a sight of a raring soundtrack collector like I am...
