Yes the score is nice....but a far cry from five stars. Three stars would have been more accurate. It is just the second extraction of the same material and that is IMO how it sounds. Sure he has done a decent job but come on five stars and Danny Elfman for his inventive score and the hilarious songs only three?

Excuse me, but Elfman's score....have you ever heard an Elfman score?....same old glockenspiel..same old harpsichord and boys/women's choir....same old rythmns....everything...I happen to really have enjoyed Corpse Bride, but it is a carbon copy of Edward Scissorhands, Nightbreed, Batman, Nightmare Before Christmas, Frighteners, Instinct, Sleepy Hollow...the list goes on..
these scores are all extremely similar in structure and orchestrations, rythmns and chord progressions...
Danny, in my book, has not come out with anything truly inventive or original since Black Beauty and Sommersby...Big Fish wasn't too bad either...but come on..."inventive" ???
He came up with his wonderful creepy style in the 80s and has not departed except for a few listed above....(and other smaller projects)
not to BASH Elfman, mind you..
but Horner, on this score, has delivered...something fresh, exciting, awe inspiring...
something even the Mask of Zorro didn't have...truly authentic flavours with a flow and energy, (not to mention complexity) not heard in Hollywood music today.
Same thems...totally different takes...and wonderful use of them...AWESOME!

To answer you question. I own 12 Elfman scores and I absolutly do not agree with you. It seems you haqve not yet listened to Sommerspy, Black Beauty or Big Fish. Horner...sometimes I don't know if i love his music or hate it. He is one of the laziest composers, who steals from himself over and over again. If you want to talk about carbon copies then listen to Backdraft, Apollo 13, Braveheart, Titanic and Deep Impact in one go and you will know what I mean. I can absolutly not agree with you.

I somewhat agree about the score being overrated. And as for me, it is definitely not the best score of the year.
It’s hard to compare such a thing with scores of just another kind (e.g. I liked The War of the Worlds greatly and at the same time was fascinated by John Powell’s The Robots; and still they are both incomparable with this Zorro). So if to remember last scores of such category I’d say that this year’s Kingdom of the Heaven is far more interesting in themes and orchestration (also well pretends to be ethnic).
On one hand I haven’t seen The Legend of Zorro and can’t say how good it is in the film, but on the other I’ve seen KotH and didn’t like it at all, although I liked the score.
So I’d give four stars for the spanish instrumentation and rhythms, and for the good mild sound.
