Excuse me, but Elfman's score....have you ever heard an Elfman score?....same old glockenspiel..same old harpsichord and boys/women's choir....same old rythmns....everything...I happen to really have enjoyed Corpse Bride, but it is a carbon copy of Edward Scissorhands, Nightbreed, Batman, Nightmare Before Christmas, Frighteners, Instinct, Sleepy Hollow...the list goes on..
these scores are all extremely similar in structure and orchestrations, rythmns and chord progressions...
Danny, in my book, has not come out with anything truly inventive or original since Black Beauty and Sommersby...Big Fish wasn't too bad either...but come on..."inventive" ???
He came up with his wonderful creepy style in the 80s and has not departed except for a few listed above....(and other smaller projects)
not to BASH Elfman, mind you..
but Horner, on this score, has delivered...something fresh, exciting, awe inspiring...
something even the Mask of Zorro didn't have...truly authentic flavours with a flow and energy, (not to mention complexity) not heard in Hollywood music today.
Same thems...totally different takes...and wonderful use of them...AWESOME!
